Enheduanna of Ur (approx. 2250 BC) First Author in World
"What I have done here, no one has done before!"
Daughter of the great king Sargon I of Sumeria, the first author and theologian in history. Her 4000-year-old poems to the Goddess Inanna, written a mere 300 years after the invention of written language, demonstrate a keen insight into the nature of power. In addition to being a princess, she held the most important religious office in the realm -- High Priestess of Ur -- as well as managing and overseeing the agricultural and fishing industries.

Poetry
"To Shakespeare" (1974) Sonnet
· Status - As far as I know, the only poem I've published... in my highschool yearbook (1975).
Written for Mary Turzillo and Geoff Landis as a Clarion exercise. We picked the poetic form and subject matter out of a hat. I was lucky, I turned mine into a spin-off from my novel.
"The Last of the Red Moons Over Cothaï" (2002-03) A Dream Poem
A dream I had in 1986, in which I was promised I would be published. Undeniably, imagery and place names from the dream have crept into my novel. Then as I lay awake one night last fall, the dream reformed itself in my mind as a poem.
